Day 47 - Franz Josef Glacier to Queenstown

Finally crossed the Haast Pass where a major landslide a few weeks ago has led to the road being closely monitored and closed at night. Rained all day. Awful driving conditions and poor visibility.

However now checked into a great hotel on the Lakefront in Queenstown for a few nights.

Day 46 - Greymouth to Franz Josef Glacier via Ross

Ross is still an active gold mining town but plays up to its historic role as a 'wild west' prospecting town.

Both Glaciers a little disappointing. Fox glacier is below.
Supposed to drive down to Queenstown but road was blocked at Haast due to a landslide.
Haast is awful. No petrol, no diesel, nothing. Eventually got petrol otherwise stuck in the middle of nowhere with a couple of grotty no star/one star motels. Returned to Franz Josef Glacier for the night.

Left the cottage and headed first South to Kaikoura and then across the Island to Greymouth on the West Coast.

Seal colonies near Kaikoura.

Day 43 - drive across the north of the Island to Nelson and back

Pleasant drive, mountains, bays and the largest mussel farming area in the world. Weather beginning to turn nasty for really the first time on the New Zealand trip.

Day 40 and 41 - Wellington to Blenheim

Crossed on the ferry from North Island to South Island on Friday. Taking a break from the road trip for a few days in the Marlborough area south of Blenheim. Rented a beautiful, rustic country cottage for 5 days near the sea.

Our neighbours visit every morning and evening.
